Pre-Recorded Announcement Era

Occasionally, even with the pre-recorded announcement system, operators need to make manual announcements for a variety of reasons. Some examples of these follow:

Clark-Division_ToRooseveltOnly.wav (301k): This sound is a combination of the automated announcement system and the train operator making a manual announcement. Automated: "This is Clark and Division." Operator: "Alright passengers, this train is only going as far as Roosevelt. (inaudible) ...as far as Roosevelt." (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

Clark-Lake_next.wav (49k): "Clark and Lake will be next. Clark and Lake." (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

SBto95th-ThisIsRoosevelt.wav (376k): "This is a southbound train going to 95th, making all stops. This is a southbound train to 95th, making all stops. This train is going south to 95th, making all stops. This stop is Roosevelt." (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

Western_next.wav (33k): "Western is next." (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

Manual Purple Line announcement for Addison, a weekday Cubs game day-only stop:

Addison_next-Purple.wav (487k): "Hello passengers: This is a regular train going to Addison. Once this train leaves Howard, our next stop will be Addison, Cubs game and Wrigley Field. Once again, once this Purple Line train leaves Howard Street, our next stop will be Addison, Wrigley Field Cubs game." (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

On the Occasion of a Green Line Reroute over the Loop Elevated, a Loop Shuttle was Operated:

GreenReroute@State.wav (436k): "To go to the Green Line to Harlem and Lake, take trains one stop to Clark and Lake, wait there for the Harlem/Lake train to pick you up. Pre-Recorded Announcements

In 2000, the CTA activated a pre-recorded announcement system on its trains. The pre-recorded announcement system assures consistently correct, clear and helpful announcements. The messages for all the rail lines are loaded onto every railcar, allowing units to be interchanged throughout the rail system.

Although the announcements are pre-recorded and the sequence is pre-programmed, the announcement were not originally "automatic"; they were manually triggered by the train operator. The operator performs a log-on procedure on the Operator Control Unit (OCU), a small display unit with buttons to navigate through on-screen menus, at the beginning of every trip that automatically cues the system to select the proper messages for that line, direction of travel, day, and time of day. Regular announcements can be played from the OCU and are sequenced automatically. Informational (public service) announcements are sequenced into the regular message lists and require no special procedures. The older cars -- 2200-, 2400-, 2600- and 3200-series cars -- required each message in the sequence to be triggered manually until those cars' retirement. The 5000-series cars, equipped with GPS, can be set on an "automatic mode" so that the regular announcement sequence does play automatically without operator intervention. The announcements can also be operated in a manual mode on the 5000s as well.

Special announcements for delays to service must be manually selected at the OCU before being played on any car series. Similarly, the "Doors closing" announcement is manually triggered each time it is played, either from the OCU or, more typically, from the 4-button keypad on one of the two door control boxes in the motorcab since the operator should play this announcement while operating the doors and observing the platform. The keypads can also trigger the playing of regular announcements that have been sequenced and are currently displayed on the regular OCU screen. They cannot play the special (delay of service) announcements.

The voice in the announcements on the "L" is that of Lee Crooks, a professional voiceover artist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Crooks was chosen from among a half-dozen potential voices, male and female and of a racial mix, CTA spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney told the Chicago Tribune. An Americans with Disabilities Act advisory committee and CTA's executive committee voted for the winner, which in this case was no contest. "The voice selected was the No. 1 with both groups because it was clear, easy to understand, friendly but also professional," Gaffney said.

In 2002, the CTA began installing an automated voice annunciation system (AVAS) from Clever Devices on all buses, which automatically makes next-stop and external route identification announcements. Crooks was used to record the messages for this system as well, truly making him "the voice of the CTA."

Crooks still records new and updated messages and soundbites for the system as needed.

A few news articles about Lee Crooks:

Miscellaneous

AVM_alarm.wav (107k): This is the alarm noise made when an Automatic Vending Machine (AVM) that dispenses TransitCards is broken into. It was recorded at Midway when a repairman opened an AVM and accidentally set off the alarm. (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

brown_song.wav (349K): An excellent jingle about the Brown Line, performed by the CTA choir, sung at the Ravenswood Line 90th Anniversary celebration at the Damen station. Wouldn't this make an excellent CTA commercial?

Chicago-Red_escalator.wav (175k): The escalator from the northbound platform to the mezzanine at the rehabbed Chicago/State subway station has a multi-lingual recorded safety warning. Alternating male (the same man as on the trains and buses) and female voices tell people to "Please, watch your step" in several languages. The recording is motion-activated, only playing when someone is sufficiently close to the escalator. (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

Inbound_Train.wav (170k): "Attention customers: An inbound train, toward the Loop, will be arriving shortly."..(Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

Inbound_Train-vers3.mp3 (100k): A new recording of, "Attention customers: An inbound train, toward the Loop, will be arriving shortly."..(Sound courtesy of Marlene Emilia)

Outbound_Train.wav (164k): "Attention customers: An outbound train, from the Loop, will be arriving shortly." (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta)

Outbound_Train-vers2.wav (265k): This is an revised version of the canned announcements for arriving trains, with a different message than is used at most stations. The recordings were made a couple of years apart and their messages are a bit better in quality due to equipment improvements during that time. The same voice is used, but the wording and cadence are different -- this was done to better synchronize the audio with the text message that scrolls across the station's variable message signs for ADA compliance. The message only plays once per track trigger, as opposed to the older message which plays twice. It is being used at a few stops, mostly on the Green Line. Since the Green Line has the oldest installed digital PA system equipment, a minor hardware upgrade was required to implement this function. In the process of installing the upgrade, many of the Green Line message files were updated as well. Note that an actual time until arrival is given, rather than the more general verbiage used in the later version (see previous): "Attention customers: An outbound train, from the Loop, will be arriving in approximately one minute." (Sound courtesy of Tony Coppoletta, information courtesy of John Robertson, Aldridge Electric)

Outbound_Train-vers3.mp3 (117k): A new recording of, "Attention customers: An outbound train, from the Loop, will be arriving shortly." (Sound courtesy of Marlene Emilia)
