As two Evanston trains of 4000-series
cars meet at Davis
station in downtown Evanston, car 4293 leads the northbound
train (at left) on September 15, 1969. The trolley
poles seen here would be needed for another four years
before third rail was installed. (Collection

Out of revenue service for about a year, car 4325 leads a
work train -- including fully converted, yellow-painted 4000-series work cars --
through Howard
Yard on August 7, 1974. Note the other work car on the
left in the yard. (Photo by Doug Grotjahn,

To provide more effective rail grinding operations (and
the ability to do it at speed), car 4358 was converted into
work car S-1 in 1972 and named "Shhhicago". The car is still
undergoing conversion, though already wearing its
distinctive red paint scheme at Skokie
Shops on April 1, 1972. The car would not enter service
until June. A 6000-series
car is behind 4358, while a 2000-series
car is on the track to the right.

The CTA's training train is on the Ravenswood here,
passing Montrose
station on August 20, 1970. Note the two uniformed men in
the motorcab; presumably, one is the line instructor or
supervisor and the other is the trainee.
