A CTA Training Train, led by car 4391, pulls out from the Kedzie
station on the Ravenswood branch on August 20, 1970. The
design of this two-story station was unique, though it was
similar to Linden
in some respects. The CTA placed automated crossing gates
across the sidewalks at Ravenswood grade-crossings to
protect pedestrians. (Photo by Joe

Car 4401 leads a CTA Training Train (evidenced by the
front destination sign) passes through Western
on August 21, 1970. Passing in the opposite direction is a
Ravenswood "A" train of various PCC cars, including a
6000 (center) and
1-50 series car 12
(right). The Western center track is also
evident. (Photo by Joe

Until the Lake Line was through-routed with the Dan Ryan
Line in 1969, it terminated around the Loop. Starting in
1913, it operated counterclockwise on the Inner Loop. Here,
car 4407 leads a Lake "B" train through the Tower
18 interlocking, across the Outer Loop track (by this
point used primarily by Ravenswood trains) toward Randolph/Wells
in January 1964. (Collection of Joe

A Ravenswood "A" train led by car 4410 nears Sedgwick
station, looking east on October 21, 1973. A CERA
fantrip is the reason for the 4000s
presence here, as the 4000s
were removed from Ravenswood service in 1971 when sufficient
numbers of 6000s and
1-50s were assigned. Use
of the outside tracks was suspended in 1963 after the
closure of the North Shore Line, though they were retained
for occasional use; in 1976, they were completely removed
from service. (Collection of Joe

Car 4427, seen here in the Lower
63rd Yard on July 4, 1971, appears to be consigned to
work motor service here, though it was never officially
converted to a service car. It was near the end of its life,
as it would be scrapped exactly one year later in July 1972.
Note the bald roofs on these "plushies", which originally
had numerous ventilators as well as trolley poles. The roofs
were reconfigured while the cars were in Ravenswood service
for reasons that are not 100% certain, though possibly to
simply make roof repairs easier. (Photo by

Car 4427 is parked in the Lower
63rd Yard among the many construction materials that are
commonly stored there on July 4, 1971. The Chicago Skyway is
in the background on the right while a CHA apartment
building can be seen on the left. Note again the bald roofs
on the previously "busy" roofs of these "plushies."
